THE MODEL CONTEXT PROTOCOL (MCP) AND TOOL STANDARDS
Part 2 of 11
WHAT THE MODEL CONTEXT PROTOCOL IS
The MCP is an open standard for connecting AI models and agents to tools and data.
A protocol is an agreed set of rules for how two programs talk to each other, just as human languages have grammar so that people can understand each other.
Open means the rules are published for anyone to read and use, rather than being locked inside one company's product.
Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude models, introduced MCP in November 2024.
Since then it has been adopted by many other companies and tool makers, and the standard has grown beyond its single-vendor origins.
[v2 UPDATE] As of 2026, independent trackers report that the public MCP server ecosystem has grown past 10,000 servers, with tens of millions of monthly downloads of the SDKs that help people build with it, and Anthropic transferred protocol governance to a vendor-neutral foundation in December 2025.
Reports describe that foundation as the Agentic AI Foundation, hosted under the Linux Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization that supports open-source technology projects.
An SDK is a bundle of ready-made code libraries that helps programmers build software for a particular system.
You should treat the exact figures as estimates from outside trackers rather than official counts, and check current sources, because the numbers change quickly.
The important lesson is the trend: MCP has moved from a single-vendor proposal into a broadly adopted, multi-vendor industry standard, now also used in agent products from other major providers.
