CONTEXT CONSTRUCTION (THE CONTEXT BUILDER)

Part 2 of 12

WHAT A CONTEXT BUILDER DOES Recall that the model remembers nothing between calls. So before every call, something must assemble the full text the model will read. That something is the context builder. You can picture it as a chef assembling a plate. The kitchen contains many ingredients, but a good chef does not dump the whole pantry onto the plate. The chef selects, arranges, and presents only what makes the dish work. In the same way, the context builder selects from everything the harness knows, arranges it in a sensible order, and presents it to the model in a clear format. A typical context builder takes these inputs. The standing instructions, which describe the agent's role and rules. The tool descriptions, which describe what the agent can do. The task, which states the current goal. The history, which records what has happened so far. Any retrieved reference material, which the harness looked up. Any special notes, such as reminders or a summary of older work. It produces one organized prompt, ready to be sent. Because it runs before every single call, the context builder is one of the most influential pieces of the entire harness. Small improvements in it can produce large improvements in reliability, without changing the model at all.
