LIFECYCLE HOOKS

Part 10 of 11

CHAPTER SUMMARY Hooks are code that runs automatically at defined lifecycle stages, so rules are enforced rather than merely requested. Pre-execution interceptors prevent harm before an action, and post-execution interceptors observe, record, and sanitize afterward. Validation hooks check correctness, logging hooks create complete records, and approval hooks bring a human into high-risk decisions. Continuation hooks stop premature surrender by re-injecting the goal with fresh strategies, but they must be capped and must never override safety. KEY TERMS REVIEW Hook: code that runs automatically at a defined stage. Interceptor: a hook that can inspect, change, or stop what passes through. Deny-list: a list of forbidden patterns. Allow-list: a list of explicitly permitted actions. Human-in-the-loop: a design in which a person must take part in important decisions. Continuation hook: a hook that keeps an agent working when it tries to stop too early.
