LOGGING, METRICS, AND DASHBOARDS

Part 2 of 9

DASHBOARDS AND ALERTS A dashboard is a screen that shows the key metrics as charts and numbers, updated live. An alert is an automatic message sent when a metric crosses a set limit, such as success rate dropping below ninety percent for fifteen minutes. Alerts should be tuned carefully. Too sensitive, and the team is woken for nothing and starts ignoring them, which is called alert fatigue. Too lax, and real problems go unnoticed. DRIFT MONITORING Drift means a slow change in behavior over time, often with no code change. Models get updated, data changes, and users ask new kinds of questions. Drift monitoring is watching for those slow changes, for example by comparing this month's average response length or success rate with last quarter's. It catches problems that are not yet failures, much like a doctor noticing a slowly rising blood pressure before any symptom appears.
