RESPONSIBLE AI, COMPLIANCE, AND RISK
Part 3 of 10
STANDARDS AND RISK MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORKS
A framework is a structured set of recommended practices.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the United States publishes the Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework, a voluntary guide for finding, measuring, and managing risks from AI systems.
The ISO and other bodies also publish standards for AI management.
Some regions have passed laws that classify AI uses by risk level and impose duties that grow with the risk, and rules and dates are changing, so always check the current text for your region before relying on a summary.
A simple risk approach is to rate each feature as low, moderate, or high based on the possible harm and on whether the harm can be undone, and to require more review for higher ratings.
HUMAN OVERSIGHT, ESCALATION, AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Human oversight means a person can watch, question, and override what the agent does.
An escalation path is a defined route for sending hard or risky cases to a human.
Accountability means a named person or team is responsible for the system and its results.
A machine cannot be held responsible, so an organization must decide who is, before something goes wrong.
