SURVEY OF AGENT FRAMEWORKS

Part 5 of 11

LIGHTWEIGHT, MINIMAL AGENT FRAMEWORKS The third family goes in the opposite direction. A lightweight or minimal framework provides little more than the basic loop and the plumbing for calling tools. It leaves the architecture decisions, such as memory, planning, and coordination, mostly to you. Think of buying a bare bicycle frame with wheels, instead of a full touring bike with racks, lights, and a basket. You get a light, simple machine that you can customize exactly, but you must add what you need. Several model providers publish their own small software development kits, or SDKs, for building agents, and some of these follow this minimal philosophy. An SDK is a bundle of code and documentation that helps programmers build for a particular product or service. The strengths of this family are control and clarity. There is little hidden behavior, so you can read the whole thing and understand it. The cost is that you write more yourself, and you must make good decisions about safety, memory, and verification that a larger framework might have suggested for you.
