THE ECONOMICS OF AGENTS
Part 1 of 11
LEARNING GOALS
By the end of this chapter you will be able to explain why cost is a design concern for every agent.
You will be able to describe token economics and why agents spend more than simple chatbots.
You will know the difference between token cost and total operating cost, and what financial operations for AI means.
WHY MONEY MATTERS TO A HARNESS ENGINEER
Many beginners treat cost as an afterthought.
They build an agent, see it work, and only later discover that each run costs far more than the value it creates.
That is like opening a restaurant where every meal costs ten dollars to cook but sells for eight.
The food might be wonderful, but the business will not survive.
This chapter gives you the vocabulary and the habits to understand where the money goes in an agent system.
It covers four ideas.
First, token economics, which explains how the amount of text an agent reads and writes drives cost.
Second, why model inference is usually the biggest cost and delay.
Third, the difference between the token bill and the total cost of running an agent.
Fourth, Financial Operations (FinOps) for AI, which is the habit of managing spending in a disciplined way.
