DOMAIN-SPECIFIC HARNESSES
Part 4 of 10
REGULATED FIELDS AND EXTRA COMPLIANCE CARE
A regulated field is an industry where laws or official rules control how work must be done, such as healthcare, banking, insurance, law, and education.
Compliance means following those rules, and it often requires proof that you followed them.
Part Nine introduced governance, and regulated fields turn it up to the highest level.
Common requirements include the following.
Human review: certain outputs must be approved by a licensed professional before they reach a person.
Audit trails: complete, tamper-resistant records of what the agent did and why.
Privacy rules: strict limits on collecting, storing, and sharing personal data, with special categories, such as health information, receiving extra protection.
Explainability: the ability to explain how a decision was reached, especially when it affects a person's rights or access to services.
Fairness testing: checking whether the agent treats groups of people unequally.
Documentation: records of testing, risks considered, and decisions made.
Rules differ by country and region and change over time, so involve qualified legal and compliance professionals and check current requirements rather than assuming.
This book teaches engineering habits, and it does not provide legal advice.
A useful rule is that the agent drafts and a qualified human decides, wherever the consequences for a person are serious.
