THE ROLE OF THE AI HARNESS ENGINEER
Part 4 of 14
HOW THE ROLE RELATES TO ITS NEIGHBORS
A prompt engineer writes and refines the wording of instructions to a model.
That is valuable, but a prompt is a single ingredient.
The harness engineer decides whether and when that instruction block is placed in context for a given step, what happens if the model ignores it, and which checks run afterward.
You can think of the prompt engineer as the author of a recipe card, and the harness engineer as the designer of the kitchen in which the recipe is cooked.
A machine-learning engineer trains, tunes, and measures models themselves, often working with data and training systems.
A harness engineer usually takes a model as given and builds the dependable system around it.
The two work together, since problems seen in the harness, such as a recurring failure type, can guide what the model team improves.
A platform team builds and runs the shared infrastructure that many teams use, such as where logs are stored and how dashboards are displayed at scale.
The harness engineer decides what observability data an agent emits, and the platform team provides the machinery that stores and shows it.
Each role has a different center of gravity, and in small organizations one person may wear several hats.
