THE ROLE OF THE AI HARNESS ENGINEER
Part 10 of 14
QUESTIONS TO ASK IN AN INTERVIEW OR A NEW JOB
Whether you are applying for a role or starting one, good questions reveal how mature a team is.
How do you measure whether the agent is doing a good job?
What happens when it makes a mistake, and who finds out?
What limits and permissions does it have, and who approves changes to them?
How are costs tracked?
Is there a written plan for incidents?
Teams that can answer these questions clearly are usually teams where a harness engineer can do good work.
WHY THE ROLE MATTERS
The model gets the headlines, yet the harness decides whether a model's ability becomes a dependable product.
A strong model inside a weak harness wastes money, makes mistakes without anyone noticing, and can cause harm.
A modest model inside a strong harness, with clear limits, good tools, careful memory handling, and honest testing, can be trusted with real work.
This is why organizations that use agents seriously look for people who can build the part around the model.
It is a role of responsibility, and it is also a role of craft, in which careful attention to small details adds up to systems that people can rely on.
