THE TOOL REGISTRY
Part 4 of 10
TYPED HANDLERS
Many tools share a lot in common.
All file tools need to make sure the path stays inside the allowed folder.
All web tools need to respect network rules.
All process tools need time limits.
Typed handlers means grouping tools into categories, each with a shared base of checks.
Think of a restaurant with a pastry station, a grill station, and a salad station.
Each station has its own standard equipment and cleanliness rules, and every dish prepared there follows those rules automatically.
For tools, you might have a file handler base, a process handler base, and a web handler base.
Each specific tool, such as read_file or write_file, is built on top of its category's base.
The great advantage is that a fix in one place fixes everything.
If the file handler base gains a stronger path-safety check, then read_file, write_file, and list_directory all become safer at once.
Typed handlers also make it easy to apply category-wide policies, such as "every web tool must pass through the network allowlist."
