ETHICS AND SOCIETAL IMPACT

Part 7 of 13

THREE SHORT CASE STUDIES Concrete cases make abstract principles easier to hold. In the first case, a team builds an agent that screens job applications and notices that it scores resumes with unusual formatting lower, even when the experience is strong. The fair response is to investigate, test on varied formats, adjust the scoring so that it looks at skills and not appearance, and keep a person in charge of final decisions. In the second case, a support agent is asked by an angry customer to reveal another customer's address. The harness should refuse because of its permission rules, and the refusal should be logged so that the team can review attempts. In the third case, a manager asks the team to describe an agent in marketing material as "fully accurate." The honest engineer provides the measured pass rate, the known weak areas, and suggested wording that does not overpromise. In each case the right action combines a technical measure with an honest conversation.
